Eating In Harmony With The Spring Season

I know it´s spring because the sunny days & warming weather beckon me outside. The forest smells different & I see the wildflowers poking up their green leaves & array of colored flowers. Spring is early this year. Overnight the grass in the pasture has sprung to life, all green & lush. Time to fertilize the blueberries, asparagus & garlic - they´ll all be waking up & will be so hungry after being dormant all winter. But, before I fertilize, I have to weed & I notice the soil. Instead of being hard from cold and frost, it´s softening & warming from spring rain & sun. It feels ready for tilling and planting.

Spring & Summer Foods

We´ve been eating heavier foods and larger quantities of food over the winter but with spring we can start lightening our diets both in quality and quantity, in harmony with the yang, ascending, expansive energies of spring.

As the weather warms, start switching from winter´s hearty soups and stews to include more fresh, organic vegetable juices, fresh, gently steamed greens and salads, including some dandelion greens or other wild greens as available in your area. Sprouts, young plants, fresh greens are the most harmonious foods to promote well-being in the spring. Avoid heavy and salty foods as these can clog the liver. Sweet and pungent herbs and foods are the best flavors.

Herbs like basil, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, dill and bay leaf are good spring seasonings. Steamed or freshly juiced beets (in combination with other veggies) are great for the liver, blood and colon. Dandelion greens are wonderful for the liver.

Enjoy about 8 to 12 ounces of fresh, organic vegetable juice per day. Experiment with mixtures of apple, carrot, celery, beet, cucumber and kale.

Listen to Yourself

There is no one right diet for everyone. Each person is an individual, with different needs that change with time, where we live, what we are doing & what phase of life we are in. Know yourself, then listen to yourself.

If you are changing to a healthier diet, change slowly, at your own pace, comfort & enjoyment level. Consider the foods you eat. Be aware of their effect on you, your energy level, your moods, feeling of well-being. Find & eat foods you enjoy, that impart sustained energy, a sense of well-being & enable you to achieve your goals in life. Make your meals a spacious enjoyable time for savouring your food, yourself, friends or family, & for laughter.

Keep it simple. Being in balance allows us to enjoy life with an awareness of how to fulfill our needs simply in a harmonious & joyful way.

Living In Harmony

According to The Yellow Emperor´s Classic of Medicine, people used to live healthy, vital lives into their hundreds because they led a "calm and honest existence, detached from undue desire and ambition. They were active, but never depleted themselves." Through living simply, adjusting our eating, attire, exercise and emotional attitudes to be in harmony with the seasons we live attuned to natural law and can know inner peace and contentment. This is a true gift we can give ourselves, each other and the world.
